Following our first harvesting trips in May we worked alongside each other in our workspace at the Museu de la Pauma experimenting with our new selection of materials - combining Willow, Olive and Cane - materials we know already with freshly gathered materials. Monica worked on a panel featuring the yellow everlasting flowers Sempreviva (Helichrysum stoechas) while I combined flexible Pine twigs with Asphodel (Asphodelus spp) leaves.

A continuació de les nostres sortides a collir material al maig, vam estar treballant un al costat de l'altre al nostre espai de taller al Museu de la Pauma experimentant amb la nova selecció de materials, combinant Vímet, Olivera i Canya, materials que ja coneixem bè, amb els materials acabats de collir. La  Mònica va fer un panell teixint amb Sempreviva (Helichrysum stoechas) mentre jo combinava branques de Pi flexibles amb fulles d'Asfódelo (Asphodelus spp).

 

hands on..... a les mans...

Just to explain - Ports i Mans - the title of our residency in the Parc Natural dels Ports of southern Catalonia translates as 'Ports and Hands' simply describing our presence as makers in the natural park over the coming year. In May this year we made our first gathering trips into the mountains above Mas de Barberans harvesting materials we thought promising and inspiring for our makings. Many of the materials we shall be working with are not traditionally used for basketmaking and the properties of many are as yet uncertain - we shall discover as we go!

Una petita explicació, Ports i Mans, el títol de la nostra residència al Parc Natural dels Ports, descriu la nostra presència com a cistellers al parc natural durant un any sencer.  El passat mes de maig vam fer les nostres primeres sortides  per collir materials que ens van semblar amb possibilitats i inspiradors per treballar amb ells.  Molts dels materials amb els que treballarem no seran aquells que s'han fet servir tradicionalment per cistelleria i las seves propietats son encara incertes per nosaltres, així doncs, ho anirem descobrint a mida que anem experimentant!

Misty Morning. Boira al matí.

After a busy summer of travelling, teaching, making and demonstrating around Europe we are back in southern Catalonia this week continuing our residency exploring the plant materials of Els Ports National Park and the environs of Mas de Barberans through the seasons. An early look out the window this morning revealed low cloud drifting through the locally named 'Sea of Olives' on the plain below Mas de Barberans. While I tried my best to get down in amongst the cloud to photograph the veiled silhouettes of the trees the sun came out and scorched it all away before I was able to capture what I imagined, however walking on it was great to see a new array of flowers and autumn colours on the rocky dry terraces between the olive groves.

Després d'un estiu viatjant, donant cursos, fent cistells i demostracions per Europa, estem de tornada al sur de Catalunya aquesta setmana per continuar la nostra residència explorant les fibres vegetals del Parc Natural dels Ports i els voltants de Mas de Barberans.  Un cop d'ull per la finestra a primera hora revela un núvol baix tocant el que localment és anomenat "El Mar d'Oliveres" a la plana sota Mas de Barberans.  Tot i que m'he afanyat per baixar i entrar al núvol per fotografiar les siluetes vetllades dels arbres, el sol ha sortit abans que pogués capturar el que m'havia imaginat, però el passeig ha estat fantàstic per veure una nova col-lecció de flors i els colors de la tardor a les terrasses seques i rocoses entre els camps d'oliveres.

Ports i Mans - the start of a creative adventure....

At the start August just after the annual La Fira de les Fibres Vegetals (an excellent fair celebrating all things to do with plant fibres and basketmaking) in Mas de Barberans, southern Catalonia, Spain; myself and Mònica Guilera started the first week of our makers residency in the beautiful surroundings of Mas de Barberans . In partnership with the Museu de la Pauma (Palm Museum) and the Els Ports National Park we will be working over the four seasons of the coming year exploring the making potential of the diverse local vegetation and gathering inspiration from the landscape and natural history of the region. We'll be keeping a regular blog of our activities and researches over the coming months leading up to our residency exhibition at next years Fira de les Fibres Vegetals. 
Much more to follow but today just a few pictures to whet the apetite!

A principis d'agost, just després de la Fira de les Fibres Vegetals (una fira excel-lent al voltant del món de les fibres vegetals i la cistelleria) a Mas de Barberans ( al Montsià, Tarragona), la Mònica Guilera i jo vam començar la  primera setmana de residència en els bonics entorns del Mas de Barberans. En associació amb el Museu de la Pauma i el Parc Natural dels Ports, estarem treballant durant les 4 estacions del any, explorant el potencial de la variada vegetació local per als seus usos en cistelleria i prenent com inspiració el paisatge i història natural de la regió.  Mantindrem obert aquest blog on regularment anirem explicant les nostres activitats i recerca durant els propers mesos que ens portaran a una exposició on mostrarem els resultats d'aquesta experiència.  Aquesta exposició es farà coincidint amb les dates de la Fira de les Fibres Vegetals , el primer cap de setmana d'agost del 2014.
