Garden of Vegetable Fibres, Racó de les Fibres Vegetals, Mas de Barberans

Sarga (Salix elaeagnos)
Alongside the actual building and collection of the Museu de la Pauma there is also a very useful collection of plants associated with basketmaking and associated vegetable fibre crafts, the Racó de les Fibres Vegetals located on the edge of Mas de Barberans features a variety of native willows, rushes, grasses and the mainstay of the local basketmaking tradition the European Fan Palm or Pauma (Chamaerops humilis).

gathering Thistles - seeing baskets... collint Cards - veient cistells...

Illyrian thistle (Onopordum illyricum)

On one of our first days exploring the Parc Natural dels Ports in May this year I was struck by the variety of Thistle species growing along the roadsides and their diversity of form - from dwarf stemless crowns of grey woolly leaves to thickets of spiky stems. The structure of the flowerheads is truly incredible with recurved spines, additional barbs and protected purple tubes of flowers crammed together at the centre. Manipulating the images of the flowerheads to monochrome exaggerates their sculptural forms.

Looking at these forms I imagine baskets - nature provides an endless variety of circular forms in all manner of shapes and sizes that can provide us with both inspiration and raw material. It is one thing to imagine and another to make! Gathering the thistles is a tricky and painful business, removing the stem prickles we played with making arrangements along the road only disturbed by passing traffic as soon as we had set up an arrangement! We will dry the harvested stems and see how they behave and perhaps continue working with them in a couple of months time.....

Returning from our recent residency week in Mas de Barberans it is such a pleasure to look over our photographs and reflect upon all the things that catch our eye. Photography - perhaps unlike many other creative techniques gives us such a spontaneous way of gathering ideas, colours and textures that feed into the creative process. While the main direction of the Ports i Mans residency is researching the potential uses of the many and diverse plants in the environs of Mas de Barberans and the Parc Natural dels Ports it is impossible not to absorb the distinctive qualities of village architecture, the special light and everyday rhythm of looking after the olive groves and vegetable plots.

In July we launched the Ports i Mans Residency during the annual La Fira de les Fibres Vegetals in Mas de Barberans with an exhibition including a selection of photographs of our investigations so far alongside new woven pieces and an installation of suspended Cane fringes. We hope the exhibition acts as a small taster of many works to come! The photographic panels presented in the exhibition can be seen as an online exhibition in our blog page here: Online Exhibition.

Weaving with flowers. Teixint amb flors.

Following our first harvesting trips in May we worked alongside each other in our workspace at the Museu de la Pauma experimenting with our new selection of materials - combining Willow, Olive and Cane - materials we know already with freshly gathered materials. Monica worked on a panel featuring the yellow everlasting flowers Sempreviva (Helichrysum stoechas) while I combined flexible Pine twigs with Asphodel (Asphodelus spp) leaves.

hands on..... a les mans...

Just to explain - Ports i Mans - the title of our residency in the Parc Natural dels Ports of southern Catalonia translates as 'Ports and Hands' simply describing our presence as makers in the natural park over the coming year. In May this year we made our first gathering trips into the mountains above Mas de Barberans harvesting materials we thought promising and inspiring for our makings. Many of the materials we shall be working with are not traditionally used for basketmaking and the properties of many are as yet uncertain - we shall discover as we go!

Misty Morning. Boira al matí.

After a busy summer of travelling, teaching, making and demonstrating around Europe we are back in southern Catalonia this week continuing our residency exploring the plant materials of Els Ports National Park and the environs of Mas de Barberans through the seasons. An early look out the window this morning revealed low cloud drifting through the locally named 'Sea of Olives' on the plain below Mas de Barberans. While I tried my best to get down in amongst the cloud to photograph the veiled silhouettes of the trees the sun came out and scorched it all away before I was able to capture what I imagined, however walking on it was great to see a new array of flowers and autumn colours on the rocky dry terraces between the olive groves.
